Assisted living communities provide apartment-style housing and social events as well as individualized assistance. Assisted living communities frequently provide outings for social activity, help with daily activities, and help with transit and appointments. In some cases, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a health care assessment, and nursing needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, provide three meals a day, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assist with personal care, limited nursing care, social work services, and transportation. Staff are required to obtain training in a number of subjects. These include: pain management, residents rights, infection control/prevention, and assisted living concepts. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage.
