An assisted living community is a residential living community which administers supervision, assistance, and care to healthy individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The types of service provided often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, respite, or “aging in place”. The monthly median cost for a private room is around $10,494 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $9,581 . The state of New Hampshire maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Health communities Administration certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may place containers within reach, staff may not physically handle the medication, and the community may remind residents to take medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care, emergency response, medication services, and supervision of residents with cognitive deficits. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every 6 residents and one toilet for every 6 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include all snacks and meals must meet the recommended dietary guidelines of the National Academy of Science, staff responsible for food prep/service must have knowledge of resident nutritional requirements, provide snacks between meals and before bed, and provide three or more meals a day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a nursing assessment and assessment by a trained assessor. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of areas. These areas include complaint procedures, nutrition, limitations on/correct use of restraints, and first aid.
