Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer supervision, care, and social events to people around 65 years old. Services offered often involve aid with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, nursing, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has specific statutes related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with administration of medications, assistance with distribution, assistance with storage of medications, and 24-hour care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, communicating with persons with dementia, and 24 hours of additional training on interview skills.
