Assisted living communities offer residential communities and aid to seniors who need a helping hand with dressing or taking medication. Assisted living communities usually offer opportunities for recreational activity, care supervision, and aid with transportation and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, continuing care, or skilled nursing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific standards related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation licenses this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with administration of medications, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These include: mentally confused residents, promoting independence in activities of daily living, preservation of resident dignity, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, communities must provide at least three daily meals, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided.
