Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which provides supervision, care, and aid to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing support. Services offered often involve assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. In certain situations, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or continuing care. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with storage of medications, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, and nursing services. Staff members obtain education in a number of subjects. These include: working with residents with mental illness, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, mentally confused residents, and instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
