Assisted living communities arrange residential communities and aid for people who may need support with dressing or taking medication. Assisted living communities frequently provide support with the activities of daily life, care supervision, and outings for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with activities of daily living , and assistance with recreational activities. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Staff members receive training in a number of subjects. These include: techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, preservation of resident dignity, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, and mentally confused residents. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
