Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides supervision, aid, and care to healthy individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities usually offer supervision of care, assistance with appointments and transit, and opportunities for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, Alzheimer’s care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri maintains a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. Staff members receive education in a variety of areas. These areas include orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, working with residents with mental illness, preservation of resident dignity, and 24 hours of additional training consisting of definition and assessment of activities of daily living. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with recreational activities, assistance with storage of medications, and 24-hour care. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals.
