Assisted living communities offer residential communities and aid to people who may require help with cooking food or mobility. Assisted living communities frequently provide opportunities for organized activity, assistance with appointments and transportation, and assistance with the activities of daily life. In select cases, communities may provide hospice, dementia care, or “aging in place”. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has specific rules related to this kind of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. Staff members obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, abuse/neglect, promoting independence in activities of daily living, and 24 hours of additional training on interview skills. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with distribution, assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with recreational activities, and assistance with storage of medications. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents.
