Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide regular social events and apartment style housing as well as individualized help. Services provided often involve aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, continuing care, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation governs this community type. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These include: orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, and abuse/neglect. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, and Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, assistance with storage of medications, assistance with distribution, and assistance with administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
