Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and assistance for people who need support with washing or taking medication. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with the activities of daily life, supervision of care, and help with appointments and transit. In certain situations, communities may offer continuing care, respite, or hospice. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and communities must provide at least three daily meals. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, and an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with storage of medications, nursing services, 24-hour care, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, behavior management, communicating with persons with dementia, and abuse/neglect.
