Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer social events, healthcare, and supervision to individuals who are around 65 years of age or older. The services provided often include support with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, continuing care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . The state of Missouri has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation certifies this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves, Injections may be administered only by a physician or licensed nurse, and insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as an individualized service plan must be developed that describes the services to be provided to meet the resident’s needs, assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted, and authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician, and modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, assistance with administration of medications, and assistance with instrumental activities of daily living. Staff must obtain training in a number of fields. These include: abuse/neglect, communicating with persons with dementia, orientation appropriate to job function and responsibilities, and 24 hours of additional training on interview skills.
