Crestwood, Missouri

Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which offers care, support, and supervision to medically stable individuals who are not in need of skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities usually provide help with transportation and appointments, supervision of care, and outings for social activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing care, or respite. In Missouri, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $34,566 . Missouri maintains specific regulations related to this type of community. The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Division of Regulation and Licensure, Section for Long-Term Care Regulation supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be repeated whenever the resident has a significant change in condition and at least semiannually, authorized staff person and a physician must conduct a physical exam to document the individual’s current medical status and write any special orders regarding care and needed procedures, an individualized evacuation plan must be developed for residents who require more than minimal assistance to evacuate, and complete screening prior to admission to determine whether an applicant is eligible to be admitted. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with recreational activities, assistance with instrumental activities of daily living, protective oversight, and assistance with storage of medications. Staff members receive training in a variety of fields. These include: 24 hours of additional training on interview skills, techniques that are effective in enhancing residents’ choice and control over their environment, instruction regarding person-centered care and the social model of care, and (2 hours) of initial training on transfer assistance. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three daily meals, modified diets prescribed by a physician can be provided, and modified diets must be reviewed at least quarterly by a consulting nutritionist, dietitian, RN, or physician. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include insulin injections may be administered by a certified medication technician or level i medication aide who has successfully completed the state-approved course for insulin administration, a physician, pharmacist, or registered nurse (RN) must review the medication regimen of each resident every other month, and self-administer prescription and nonprescription medications if a licensed health provider approves. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through the Medicaid State Plan Personal Care authority.
