Assisted living communities administer social interaction, supervision, and personal care to people who are around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently provide aid with daily activities, supervision of care, and aid with appointments and transit. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s physical condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration, supervision of self-administered medications, and only a licensed health care professionall employed by the community may administer medications. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: privacy, philosophy and goals, disaster procedures, and internal policies. The maximum occupancy is 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include laundry, security, medication administration, and assistance with activities of daily living. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
