Assisted living communities administer care, social opportunities, and oversight to individuals who are about 65 years of age or older. Services offered often involve aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Georgia maintains specific standards related to this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff members obtain education in a number of fields. These include: general infection control principles, reporting requirements, hand hygiene, and exploitation of a resident. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assisted living care, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and described as personal services. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , and communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as whether family supports are available, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments.
