Assisted living communities provide organized social interaction and apartment style housing as well as personalized help. Assisted living communities frequently provide assistance with the activities of daily life, chances for leisurely activity, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, whether family supports are available, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, and personal preferences relative to care needs. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, hand hygiene, 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter, and emergency preparedness. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, applying topical medications, and assisting residents with self-administration.
