Assisted living communities provide social interaction, oversight, and personal care to individuals around 65 years old. Assisted living communities frequently offer help with the activities of daily life, help with transportation and appointments, and care supervision. In certain cases, communities may offer hospice, Alzheimer’s care, or continuing care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include the provision of assisted self-preservation, assisted living care, described as personal services, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , applying topical medications, and assisting residents with storage of medications. Staff members obtain training in a number of areas. These include: attendance policies, exploitation of a resident, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, and general infection control principles. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as personal preferences relative to care needs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, A written care plan must document the assessment findings, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program.
