Assisted living communities offer organized living communities and aid for persons who require a helping hand with things such as taking medication or dressing. The services provided often include help with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under observation and assessment. In select cases, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, respite, or hospice. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, personal preferences relative to care needs, and assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include including the special needs of residents with dementia, identification of conduct constituting abuse and neglect, Residents’ rights, and reporting requirements. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and described as personal services. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with self-administration, assisting with an Epi pen, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand.
