Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social opportunities, healthcare, and supervision to persons who are on average 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities often offer outings for leisurely activity, help with appointments and transit, and care supervision. In some instances, communities may offer respite, skilled nursing care, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes certifies this community type. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These areas include assistance with medications, proper food preparation, Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, and hand hygiene. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, cognitive and functionally able residents may self-administer medications , and assisting residents with self-administration. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s functional capacity with regard to ADLs, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, and A written care plan must document the assessment findings. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, assisted living care, the provision of assisted self-preservation, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25.
