Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of a sense of community as well as individualized support. Assisted living communities usually offer assistance with the activities of daily life, chances for organized activity, and aid with transit and appointments. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or dementia care. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia has specific rules associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes licenses this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Staff must obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include exploitation of a resident, assistance with medications, provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, and emergency first-aid and CPR. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with storage of medications, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and applying topical medications. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, the provision of assisted self-preservation, administration of medications by a certified medication aide, and assisted living care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as A written care plan must document the assessment findings, care plan must be updated at least annually and when there is a change in the resident’s needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day.
