An assisted living community is a residential living community which offers support, care, and aid to healthy individuals who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities commonly offer care supervision, chances for organized activity, and support with the activities of daily life. In certain cases, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing care, or “aging in place”. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . The state of Georgia maintains specific statutes associated with this type of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes supervises this community type. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assisting residents with self-administration, communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, and applying topical medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the residents cognitive and behavioral impairments, and assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include administration of medications by a certified medication aide, described as personal services, assisted living care, and the provision of assisted self-preservation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Staff must obtain education in a number of areas. These include: provision of resident care that is individualized and helpful, Residents’ rights, assistance with medications, and 24 hours of continuing education during the first year and 16 hours annually thereafter. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25.
