Assisted living communities have the luxury of coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual help. Assisted living communities commonly offer opportunities for leisurely activity, help with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer “aging in place”, respite, or nursing. In Georgia, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $135,450 . Georgia has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Department of Community Health licenses assisted living communities and personal care homes regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include at least three meals, one nutritious snack, and any therapeutic diets ordered by a resident’s health care provider must be provided each day. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as personal preferences relative to care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s physical care needs, assessment to determine the resident’s medical needs, and whether family supports are available. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include described as personal services, the provision of assisted self-preservation, assisted living care, and administration of medications by a certified medication aide. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include applying topical medications, communities must assist residents with self-administration if requested, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. Public assistance is available through 1915(c) Medicaid Waiver programs- ) the Community Care Services Program is managed by the Department of Community Health’s Division of Medical Assistance Plans and partners with the Division of Aging Services and the Service Options Using Resources in a Community Environment (SOURCE) program. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: Medical and social needs and characteristics of the resident population, assisting residents in transferring and ambulation, attendance policies, and exploitation of a resident. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 25. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
