An assisted living community is a residential community which administers aid, support, and supervision to healthy individuals who do not require skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities commonly offer assistance with appointments and transit, care supervision, and chances for leisurely activity. In select situations, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, skilled nursing care, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation governs this type of community. Staff must receive training in a number of fields. These areas include providing assistance with activities of daily living, resident behavior and needs, reporting incidents, and emergency evacuation. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, and meals must be adapted to residents preferences. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, nursing services, and assistance with activities of daily living . Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include licensed nursing staff may administer medications, staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program.
