Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer healthcare, supervision, and social events to people who are about 65 years old. Assisted living communities usually provide assistance with transit and appointments, aid with the activities of daily life, and chances for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer hospice, continuing care, or nursing care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation supervises this community type. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: resident rights, 26 hours of training plus a competency test, universal precautions, and infection control. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living . This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and licensed nursing staff may administer medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment.
