Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which administers aid, supervision, and care to self-sufficient persons who are not in need of skilled nursing care. Services offered often include support with the activities of daily life. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer hospice, skilled nursing care, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation licenses this type of community. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These include: community emergency procedures, reporting incidents, emergency evacuation, and providing assistance with activities of daily living. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, reading the label, and staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents preferences, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, personal care services, assistance with activities of daily living , and nursing services. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1.
