Assisted living communities provide residential communities and health care to seniors who need help with things such as mobility or dressing. Assisted living communities frequently offer help with appointments and transit, aid with daily activities, and chances for organized activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, hospice, or “aging in place”. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation governs this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and medical examination report. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include resident rights, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, 26 hours of training plus a competency test, and reporting incidents. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and personal care services. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff may take previously dispensed, properly labeled containers from where they are stored and bringing them to the resident, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication.
