An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers care, aid, and support to medically stable persons who are not in need of skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently offer aid with transit and appointments, outings for leisurely activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide nursing care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as communities must document such assessment, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community . This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets. Staff are required to obtain education in a number of fields. These areas include emergency evacuation, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, community sanitation procedures, and community emergency procedures. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and assistance with activities of daily living . The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program.
