Assisted living communities provide apartment style housing and social events as well as individualized assistance. Services offered often include assistance with activities of daily living. Occupants may be kept under observation and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide skilled nursing, dementia care, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific standards related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include licensed nursing staff may administer medications, reading the label, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as medical examination report, monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . Staff are required to receive training in a number of subjects. These areas include resident behavior and needs, infection control, community emergency procedures, and universal precautions. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living , nursing services, assistance with self-administration of medications, and personal care services. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1.
