Assisted Living

An assisted living community is a residential community which provides aid, support, and supervision to independent persons who do not need skilled nursing support. Assisted living communities frequently offer chances for organized activity, supervision of care, and help with daily activities. In certain situations, communities may provide Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or nursing care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida maintains specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents preferences. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication, and placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, personal care services, and assistance with activities of daily living . Staff are required to receive training in a variety of areas. These areas include universal precautions, resident abuse, neglect, and and exploitation, 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living, and resident behavior and needs. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community .
