An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides aid, care, and supervision to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities commonly provide outings for recreational activity, help with daily activities, and aid with transit and appointments. In some situations, communities may offer nursing care, hospice, or respite. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. Florida has specific standards related to this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, assistance with activities of daily living , assistance with self-administration of medications, and nursing services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include reading the label, placing an oral dosage in the resident’s hand, and opening the container and removing a prescribed amount of medication. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: community emergency procedures, resident behavior and needs, universal precautions, and infection control. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents preferences, and meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities . Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, communities must document such assessment, and community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community .
