An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, supervision, and care to healthy persons who are not in need of skilled nursing services. The services provided often involve help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under supervision and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing, or Alzheimer’s care. In Florida, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around 42,000. The state of Florida has a number of provisions associated with this type of community. The Bureau of Health community Regulation regulates this type of community. Staff members obtain training in a number of subjects. These areas include community sanitation procedures, resident rights, universal precautions, and 12 hours of continuing education every 2 years on topics related to assisted living. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include licensed nursing staff may administer medications, reading the label, and unlicensed staff may assist residents with self-administration. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include the community must provide a variety of regular meals that meet the nutritional needs of residents, the community must provide therapeutic diets as ordered by the resident’s health care provider for residents who require special diets, meals must be adapted to residents physical abilities , and meals must be adapted to residents’ food habits. Public assistance is available through 1915(b)(c) MLTC program. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 1. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as monthly nursing assessment of resident as ordered by physician , medical examination report, community must document any substantial changes in a resident’s status which may necessitate relocation to a more specialized community , and communities must document such assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include personal care services, assistance with self-administration of medications, nursing services, and assistance with activities of daily living .
