Assisted living communities offer residential communities and health care to seniors who require support with everyday activities such as dressing or cooking. Assisted living communities usually offer outings for social activity, help with the activities of daily life, and care supervision. In certain situations, communities may provide hospice, Alzheimer's care, or "aging in place". The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . The state of Connecticut has a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing governs this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include disease prevention, nursing services, medication administration, and provision of care and services to residents whose conditions are chronic and stable. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as he program must be reviewed as the resident's condition requires, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, and plan must include information about the resident's problems and needs. Staff must obtain education in a number of fields. These include: applicable regulations, aides must pass a competency exam, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, and community policies and procedures. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, medication administration , and reminding residents to take medications. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day.
