An assisted living community is a residential living community which provides support, care, and supervision to independent individuals who do not require skilled nursing care. Assisted living communities frequently provide supervision of care, help with the activities of daily life, and outings for social activity. In certain cases, communities may provide respite, skilled nursing, or hospice. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . The state of Connecticut has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing regulates this type of community. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , verifying, and reminding residents to take medications. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with self-administered medications, delegation of supervision of self-administered medications, medication administration, and assistance with ADLs. Staff members receive education in a number of subjects. These include: 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, community policies and procedures, applicable regulations, and assisted living philosophy. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, medications, treatments, and other required nursing services, and RN conducts consultation with the resident.
