An assisted living community is a residential community which provides support, care, and supervision to medically stable seniors who do not require skilled nursing services. Services offered often include aid with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, skilled nursing, or dementia care. The annual median cost for a private room is around $166,988 and the cost for a semi-private room is around $152,388 . The state of Connecticut maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Public Health, community Licensing certifies this community type. Staff members obtain training in a variety of fields. These areas include aides must pass a competency exam, community policies and procedures, 6 hours of annual in-service continuing education on topics, and assisted living philosophy. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident teaching, assistance with ADLs, medication administration, and health promotion. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as RN conducts consultation with the resident, plan must include types and frequency of services needed, he program must be reviewed as the resident’s condition requires, and plan must include information about the resident’s problems and needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include medication administration , assistance with self-administration of medications, and verifying. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide residents with three meals per day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1915(c) waiver programs and through the non-Medicaid state-funded Connecticut Home Care Program for Elders.
