Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer social events, supervision, and healthcare to persons around 65 years of age or older. The types of service offered often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under supervision and evaluation. In select situations, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or nursing. Wisconsin maintains a number of stipulations associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include resident-specific services, information and referral, behavior management, and including personal care. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, and initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment. Staff must receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include standard precautions, provision of personal care, reporting abuse, and job responsibilities. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents.
