Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer apartment-style housing and social events as well as individual help. The types of service offered often involve assistance with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. In some instances, communities may provide “aging in place”, nursing care, or hospice. The state of Wisconsin maintains a number of provisions associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include including personal care, supervision, leisure time activities, and behavior management. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet residents special dietary needs. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. Staff members obtain training in a number of fields. These include: reporting abuse, resident rights, needs assessment of prospective residents, and fire safety.
