Assisted Living

Assisted living communities provide personal care, supervision, and social opportunities to individuals who are about 65 years old. The types of service offered often involve help with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In select instances, communities may offer Alzheimer’s care, hospice, or skilled nursing. Wisconsin has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) licenses this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, and communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include information and referral, health monitoring, supervision, and leisure time activities. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. Staff members receive education in a number of fields. These include: community policies and procedures, standard precautions, needs assessment of prospective residents, and first-aid.
