Assisted Living

Assisted living communities administer care, recreational activities, and supervision to people who are around 65 years of age or older. Services offered often include help with the activities of daily life. Residents may be kept under supervision and assessment. In select instances, communities may provide nursing, Alzheimer’s care, or hospice. Wisconsin has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this community type. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include independent living skills, health monitoring, activity programming for persons with dementia, and behavior management. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: challenging behaviors, needs assessment of prospective residents, fire safety, and standard precautions. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system, and when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician.
