Assisted Living

Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social events as well as personalized care. Assisted living communities usually provide supervision of care, help with the activities of daily life, and help with appointments and transit. In select cases, communities may offer skilled nursing, respite, or “aging in place”. The state of Wisconsin maintains specific statutes associated with this kind of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) regulates this type of community. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include leisure time activities, behavior management, information and referral, and resident-specific services. Staff members receive training in a number of fields. These areas include fire safety, needs assessment of prospective residents, standard precautions, and reporting abuse. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition, and community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system.
