Assisted Living

An assisted living community is an organized living community which administers aid, supervision, and support to healthy persons who do not require skilled nursing support. The types of service provided often include aid with the activities of daily life. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide hospice, “aging in place”, or respite. The state of Wisconsin maintains a number of stipulations associated with this type of community. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services, Bureau of Assisted Living, Division of Quality Assurance, regulates community-based residential communities (CBRFs) governs this community type. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include transportation, including personal care, leisure time activities, and activity programming for persons with dementia. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide at least three nutritious meals a day and a nutritious snack, these meals must meet residents special dietary needs, therapeutic diets must be provided if ordered by a physician, and these meals must meet the recommended dietary allowances based on current dietary guidelines for Americans. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as initial comprehensive mental and physical assessment, the plan must specify which program services will be provided to meet the resident’s needs as identified by the assessment and the frequency with which each service will be provided, community must develop a temporary service plan to meet immediate needs, and reassessments must be conducted at least annually, and when residents have a change in needs, abilities, or condition. Public assistance is available through The Elderly and Physically Disabled 1915(c) Waiver program, the Community Options 1915(c) Waiver program, and the Medicaid managed care 1915(b)(c) Family Care Waiver program for the aged and physically disabled. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include Residents may self-administer medications if they are capable, when medication administration is not supervised by an RN, practitioner, or pharmacist, the CBRF must arrange for a pharmacist to package and label a resident’s prescription medications in unit dose, and If the medication administration is supervised by a licensed healthcare professionall, the community must ensure that these individuals coordinate the medication administration process and system. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. Staff are required to receive education in a number of areas. These include: development of service plans, fire safety, community policies and procedures, and resident rights.
