Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, care, and supervision to individuals around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities frequently offer assistance with appointments and transit, support with daily activities, and outings for recreational activity. Under certain circumstances, communities may offer respite, “aging in place”, or hospice. Tennessee maintains specific regulations associated with this kind of community. The Tennessee Department of Health, Board for Licensing Health Care communities licenses this community type. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as physical assessment, arrangements for visits by or to health care providers, recreational and social activities, and assistance with health services. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include opening dosage packaging, residents may self-administer medication, and observing the resident while taking medication. Staff are required to receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include food service, fire safety disaster preparedness, financial management, and emergency procedures. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include must provide three meals a day that meet acceptable and/or prescribed diet standards, the food must be adapted to residents habits, preferences, and and physical abilities, No more than 14 hours must elapse between the evening and morning meals, and must provide additional nourishment and/or snacks to residents with special dietary needs or upon request. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include responsibility for the safety of the resident when in the community, personal services such as protective care, dietary services, and laundry services. Public assistance is available through Medicaid 1115 managed care Long-Term Services and Supports CHOICES program.
