Assisted living communities administer care, social interaction, and oversight to individuals who are about 65 years of age or older. The types of service provided often involve help with ADLs. Residents may be kept under monitoring and evaluation. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide respite, “aging in place”, or dementia care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey maintains a number of stipulations related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. The maximum occupancy is 2 residents per room. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include dietary services, social work services, transportation, and pharmaceutical services. Staff members obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include caring for residents with impairment, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, abuse and neglect, and pain management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, administer medication, and monitor dosage. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, a level of care assessment, routines and preferences, and a health care assessment. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, and maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents.
