Assisted living communities provide organized living communities and health care to persons who may require help with dressing or mobility. The services provided often involve help with ADLs. Occupants may be kept under monitoring and assessment. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide dementia care, respite, or “aging in place”. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has a number of stipulations related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services certifies this community type. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances, and provide three meals a day. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Staff must receive training in a variety of subjects. These include: emergency plans and procedures, residents rights, Alzheimer’s’ and dementia care, and pain management. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as nursing needs, routines and preferences, a level of care assessment, and a health care assessment. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include limited nursing care, dietary services, social work services, and transportation. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 2 residents to a room.
