Assisted living communities have the luxury of apartment-style housing and social interaction as well as individualized care. Assisted living communities commonly provide aid with transportation and appointments, care supervision, and assistance with the activities of daily life. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide continuing care, respite, or dementia care. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . New Jersey has specific regulations related to this kind of community. Department of Health and Senior Services licenses this type of community. Staff must receive training in a variety of fields. These include: emergency plans and procedures, infection control/prevention, abuse and neglect, and residents rights. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, provide three meals a day, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a level of care assessment, nursing needs, plan updates regarding changes in physical or cognitive states, and routines and preferences. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include limited nursing care, assist with personal care, dietary services, and pharmaceutical services. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include administer medication, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and monitor dosage.
