An assisted living community is an organized living community which offers care, support, and supervision to independent individuals who do not need skilled nursing services. Assisted living communities frequently provide outings for recreational activity, support with the activities of daily life, and supervision of care. In certain instances, communities may offer dementia care, respite, or hospice. In New Jersey, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $45,000 . The state of New Jersey maintains specific statutes related to this type of community. Department of Health and Senior Services governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include provide three meals a day, maintain a standard of food preparation that meets the needs of residents, and prepare meals and snacks based on the Food and Nutrition board’s recommended dietary allowances. Staff are required to receive education in a number of fields. These include: pain management, assisted living concepts, emergency plans and procedures, and caring for residents with impairment. Public assistance is available through 1115 Demonstration Waiver program–Managed Long-Term Services and Supports. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to guarantee their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as routines and preferences, nursing needs, a health care assessment, and a level of care assessment. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include monitor dosage, supervise and assist with self-administration of medication, and administer medication. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include recreational activities, social work services, dietary services, and limited nursing care. There must be one bath or shower for every residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There is a maximum occupancy of 2 residents per room.
