Assisted Living

Assisted living communities offer coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individualized care. Assisted living communities frequently provide support with the activities of daily life, assistance with appointments and transit, and care supervision. In certain cases, communities may offer nursing care, “aging in place”, or hospice. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has a number of provisions related to this type of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health governs this type of community. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include emergency response systems, assistance with activities of daily living, laundry, and supervision of self-administered medications. Staff are required to receive training in a variety of fields. These areas include philosophy and goals, disaster procedures, privacy, and resident rights. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to ensure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. There is a maximum occupancy of 1 residents per room. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include documenting whether or not the resident took the medication, observing the resident, and medication reminders.
