Assisted living communities offer recreational activities, care, and supervision to people around 65 years of age or older. Assisted living communities usually offer aid with daily activities, outings for social activity, and care supervision. Under certain circumstances, communities may provide “aging in place”, dementia care, or nursing care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland maintains specific regulations associated with this type of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene regulates this community type. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be properly prepared, meals must be palatable, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be varied. Staff members receive education in a variety of fields. These areas include fire and life safety, the use of service plans, infection control, and including standard precautions. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, medication administration, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as evaluation by a health care practitioner is required and changes must be made to the resident’s service plan if there is an assessment score change in any way, assessed on psychiatric conditions, problematic behaviors, and the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, and occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services.
