Assisted living communities provide residential communities and health care for persons who might need a helping hand with things such as mobility or dressing. The types of service provided often involve assistance with ADLs. Inhabitants may be kept under supervision and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide respite, Alzheimer’s care, or skilled nursing. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene governs this community type. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every 1 residents. Staff members obtain education in a variety of fields. These areas include including standard precautions, health and psychosocial needs, infection control, and the resident assessment process. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be well-balanced, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, meals must be properly prepared, and meals must be of sufficient quantity and quality to meet daily nutritional needs. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include occasional assistance in accessing social and recreational services, monitoring and management of occasional psychological or psychiatric episodes or fluctuations that require uncomplicated intervention or support, assistance with self-administration of medications, and uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include staff who have passed a Board of nursing program may administer medications, physical assistance to open and remove medications from a container, and assistance with self-administration of medications. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months, risk factor management needs, a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, and activities of daily living needs.
