Excellent care, but frustrating administration

The administrative support is not the best. I have had difficulties with the billing department, and having phone calls returned related to my mothers care. I realize they are understaffed, but I think they could be more responsive to families. However, I am very pleased with the conditions, meaning: cleanliness and her apartment. I am very pleased with the meal services. Staffing is a little low and that's one reason why they have difficulties responding to phone calls. The memory care coordinator is very good, but she doesn't have the adequate staff to back her up and she can be hard to reach. They sent out a memo to all families saying its difficult to be staffed up in this climate and I know that. It's important to note that I asked for a meeting with the executive director. And that seemed to really address a lot of the problems, but I did have to go to their boss. I realize it is not an easy job, but if they would have responded in a timely manner I wouldn't have had to reach out to their boss. Once that happened, they've since been much more attentive. It took repetitive emails to staff before I had to take that approach, but should a family member have to do that? I was a manager before I retired and I don't like to go over an employees head. Once they did a good job, I did make sure to go back to their manager and let them know that they were more responsive, but it was still frustrating to me that I had to go to the director and it makes me worry about my mom. She has increasing dementia. One example is: she was really upset about noise and I couldn't get anyone on the phone to address it. The phone rang about 20 times, I didn't know if the front desk were staffed all night or who answers. It was really confusing. It took me about 2.5 weeks to get set up with the executive director because the staff were not able to answer the questions when I could get ahold of them. It's important to note that she was on vacation during part of that time, but there was no back up on an executive level (as far as I could tell). Billing was also a mess, I told the boss that staff are doing the best they can, but I don't think they are fully equipped. They lost a check for about [price removed]; they never tried to cash it or anything like that, but it did result in the payment never being applied to the books. All in all - I'm administratively frustrated, but the care is very good. For A Place for Mom: my advisor was outstanding! I have never done anything like this before ever. I've never looked for long-term care, I didn't know the terminology. I didn't know anything, and my father had just passed so I was nervous. The lady who took our case was so outstanding, she helped me calm down and find places to look at - she was awesome. I can't thank her enough for the skills she showed during that time in need. She was the best.... Read more

Hi M.D.W., It’s disappointing whenever we learn that a family member or resident did not enjoy their experience at Sunrise. One dissatisfied member of our community is one too many. Thank you for the wonderful things you said about the meals and the memory care coordinator.

A la carte pricing. Before signing a contract, be sure what you're paying for & what you need and don't need.

With memory care, some of the staff needs more education and training on how to deal with people with dementia. They're task oriented - they let the people with dementia rule them around rather than directing the dementia patents and coaxing them. Some of the staff members are very, very good, but some, particularly the younger ones, don't' seem to get it and are likely lacking in training. Cleanliness is good. Right now during Covid times, the common areas are not allowed for visitors, but you can visit in your person's room or outside, although that's slightly inconvenient. But they do have a couple of designated visiting rooms. It sounds like visitation should be opening up soon, although they haven't given a set date yet. I do like Sunrise, and I think it's a decent place that could just use a few improvements.

It is a very clean facility that is bright and cheery. All of the staff are super friendly for the most part. The admissions staff were helpful and accommodating and they just worked with us so well. From start to finish it was less than 3 weeks to get him in here which we really appreciated since we were on a time crunch. They are really trying. If it were not for covid, I think they would be able to offer more.

My tour review

We would have liked this community but it was hard to move my loved one to a different area. We were in a rushed situation and had to make a quick decision for our loved one. We also had a strict budget that we had to stick to.

Caring Environment

I'm really happy with Sunrise. One of the things I like most about it is the staff have been there for a very long time. So once you get to know everyone, you work with the same people, which is much better than other places we've experienced. They have really low turnover, and I love that. The Executive Director is very available and has sat down and talked with me several times. She is very caring and nice. The Resident Care Manager for my dad's area has also been very kind and helpful to me. They say they have a geriatric doctor, and I'm not as pleased with that. It has been very difficult to get ahold of that doctor. But I think overall what I like best about Sunrise is they do seem like a caring place. My dad has some people that he seems to really like there, and they seem to be treating him very kindly.

pretty on the outside; needs a little renovation on the inside

Sunrise of Pikesville is a very nice looking community with newly renovated common areas, hallways and furniture. while the physical appearance is great in most areas, they are lacking in other ways. the resident's living quarters/rooms are not renovated. the bathrooms are antiquated with no storage; they aren't really accessible for those with mobility issues. there's a step-up to get into the shower, which I think is potentially dangerous. I have asked about the bathtub as an alternative and whether or not it can be used, but I haven't received a direct answer. when visiting, you have to ring the doorbell to gain entrance. if they're busy inside, you will have to wait outside until they can let you in. I don't think that this system is secure, because that means everyone is allowed access if they ring the bell. there should be an access code provided to the families to create a better sense of security amongst ourselves and the residents. the previous activities director is non-existent now, so the activities are also non-existent. some of the aides will occasionally color with the residents, or give them puzzles. there is really no true social interaction or entertainment. the residents don't seem engaged with one another, or with the staff. they kind of just sit there watching tv or looking out of the window. they have not hired anyone for that specific role, but they have made promises of bringing in someone for physical activity/fun. I've tried making my own suggestions and requests, but have only be told "we'll get back to you". I do feel that they should have made this a priority months ago, as my loved one hasn't truly been engaged by the staff in months. my loved one, amongst other residents have dietary restrictions and they are not accommodating to those needs. there is no dietitian on site, so I do have concerns about that. There also seems to be a lack of communication with certain departments and people. trying to meet with members of the nursing staff, and management is very difficult. there are times I want to ensure the med techs are taking care of things, but no one gets back to me as I can never seem to find the right personnel. I do feel that there needs to be a liaison between the resident coordinator and the nursing staff. my emails are left unresponsive for several business days, there's just no coordination or sense of "teamwork". this community says that they are open to suggestions and invites emails, so I am following the proper protocol. I just feel that they should instill a better communicative system, especially if I am reaching out regarding dietary restrictions or medications. they say they have people in place, but we don't have access to them. I'm unsure of who they are or where they are? sometimes it feels like I'm chasing a ghost when trying to make contact with certain people. I don't even know where the office(s) are located because when I am able to meet with someone, our meetings are always held in the common areas. when my loved one first moved in, I met several of the nurses/nursing staff, but now I only see the same (one) nurse. there's also no nursing staff over the weekend, so if there's an issue you do have to wait until Monday. of course this raises a concern, as I'm unsure what would happen if there was an emergency. The sales person did a great job selling this community to us, but as soon as we moved in, we noticed that those promises would not be followed through. although I understand that a lot of communities have an issue with staffing retention; I did see a few staff members standing around completing small chores, when that time could be used to interact with the residents. the atmosphere is very blasé. the hallways are very pretty, and I wish the environment matched its appearance. it feels stoic, with no music or liveliness. Sunrise isn't a bad place, I just think it could be enriched more.

It's been wonderful to find a place that would help me as well as help my loved one.

I would tell other families to try them out. Compared to the place my loved one was at before, Sunrise is 100 times better. They've been very helpful. They take good care of him, and they help me with transportation when he has to have a doctor's appointment. Really my biggest frustration has been every time I have to contact somebody, that person has left and now there's somebody new. That's been mostly with the nurses. But they've made good replacements.

We toured Sunrise of Pikesville and I loved this facility we just could not afford it although we tried 3 different times to get the price where we needed it. It is a bigger community with more people and we were looking during covid so I think it would have been harder to manage the virus there.

Beyond my Expectations

They were excellent when it came to evaluating my loved one's needs when he moved in there, and getting him the things he needs regarding equipment and assistance. They were excellent beyond my expectations. His caregivers make sure he's clean and shaven and dressed. I do think that they need more help. The ones they have are working hard, but they need more coverage, just a better ratio of staff to residents. Everything is always clean - the entryway, the hallways, my loved one's room and bathroom. Floors are well swept, sink areas are clean, and all is nicely kept, including the outdoor space as well. Right now I'm only allowed to see him once a week. Since I'm fully vaccinated, I can visit in his room. If others aren't vaccinated, there are designated spots where they can visit. Again, the caregivers are very helpful with visits, and make sure he's dressed appropriately and has a jacket on if we're visiting outside. They do a great job attending to his needs.

It was a good experience

Our experience was brief but they did a great job, the care services were good and we have no complaints about Sunrise. Our loved one never complained about the meals, and they still tried to do some activities with him the best they could but he was borderline hospice. The value and price was right along with the other communities in the area.

Sunshine is Sunrise!

The staff members at the community are very friendly. We spoke with other individuals living there and they had no complaints, they really have a good track record. They have done a tremendous job during this time with COVID and the few cases they have had, have been completely resolved. We have been very pleased. Before COVID they had a lot of activities, and the event coordinator really did a lot of with the residents. They would take them out to restaurants for lunch on Tuesday's, they also have arts and crafts. They would bring in live entertainment and provide religious services.

A good place for your loved one

I would recommend this community. I liked the cleanliness of this community, the nurses and aides were nice. The community did have a lot of activities for the residents and the residents were friendly. The food was good, as well. The community's only downfall is that there is a miscommunication between hospice and the community. I would recommend that you know where hospice and community stands for the overall care of your loved one. The community is good for senior living.

We really enjoyed meeting with [name removed] and feel like Sunrise would provide a better level of care than Brightview Rolling Hills. We felt that the spaces reserved for memory care residents was more of a retrofit. The personal rooms were larger than what these people need and all had kitchenettes, which our mom doesn't need/use. The common areas seemed dark, and we didn't see many aides interacting with the residents. There were lots of little sensory areas, but those seemed like catch-alls for cleaning equipment, lifts, walkers, etc. We saw no one using any of those spaces.
