Assisted living communities have the luxury of coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individualized care. The services offered often involve support with activities of daily living. Residents may be kept under observation and evaluation. In select instances, communities may offer respite, dementia care, or skilled nursing care. In Maryland, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $51,600 . The state of Maryland has specific regulations related to this kind of community. The Department of Health and Mental Hygiene governs this type of community. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include meals must be properly prepared, meals must be palatable, programs must provide three meals a day and snacks, and meals must be well-balanced. Staff must obtain training in a variety of areas. These areas include state-approved, 5-hour training on cognitive impairment and mental illness, health and psychosocial needs, residents’ rights, and emergency disaster plans. a licensed nutritionist or licensed dietician must review menus on a 4- week cycle for nutritional quality programs must also provide special diets as ordered by a physician or needed by residents This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. There must be one bath or shower for every 1 residents and one toilet for every 1 residents. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include assistance with self-administration of medications, reminders to take medications, and a licensed health professionall must review each resident’s medication regime within 14 days of admission. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to make sure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as a comprehensive mental and physical assessment, activities of daily living needs, ability to self-administer medication, and the assessment must be reviewed every 6 months. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance in accessing and coordinating health services, uncomplicated interventions to manage occasional behaviors that might disrupt or harm the resident or others, assistance with self-administration of medications, and supervision or occasional assistance with two or more activities of daily living.
