Assisted living communities have the luxury of coordinated social interaction and apartment style housing as well as individual support. The types of service offered often involve aid with ADLs. Residents may be kept under observation and assessment. In select situations, communities may provide respite, dementia care, or skilled nursing. In Illinois, the annual median cost for an assisted living community is around $50,040 . Illinois has specific statutes related to this kind of community. The Illinois Department of Public Health supervises this community type. Staff are required to obtain training in a variety of subjects. These areas include neglect prevention, privacy, hygiene, and internal policies. This type of community is required to offer a number of services. These include assistance with activities of daily living, housekeeping, medication administration, and non-medical services. Before a resident is accepted, they must go through a service plan screening to assure their needs are going to be met. This screening includes a number of areas of interest such as assessment must be updated by a physician annually or upon a significant change in condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s psychosocial condition, evaluation of a prospective resident’s cognitive condition, and provider must ensure that the resident and the resident’s representative, if any, are informed of the potential consequences of activities that the provider considers to pose risks to health and/or safety. This community type has a number of provisions pertaining to medication assistance. These provisions include supervision of self-administered medications, observing the resident, and medication reminders. There must be one toilet for every 1 residents and one bath or shower for every residents. This type of community is required to have a staff member on duty 24 hours a day. In total, there can be no more than 1 residents to a room. The minimum number of residents for this community type is 3. Public assistance is available through A Medicaid 1915(c) waiver called the Supported Living Program and a 1915(b) waiver called the Managed Long-Term Services and Supports program. This community has a number of provisions concerning food and diet which include communities must provide three daily meals.
